Congratulations to the Hunt Family !
Winners of the 2007 Backyard Makeover Contest presented by Vic Hannan
and Channel 24.
In March of 2007 Vic Hannan organized and presented the first annual
Backyard Makeover in conjunction with Channel 24 and a number of the
northstate's leading home and garden businesses. Channel 12 and 24
viewers were urged to send in their nominations for a family or person who
most deserved a backyard makeover. The response was
overwhelming. Hundreds of letters poured into the TV station and the
yard at Vic Hannan's. The top five entries were then chosen by a panel
of employees of the participating companies. The top five stories were
then published on the web and viewers were then invited to visit the site
and vote for their choice. Tens of thousands of votes were cast in a
very short time. When the votes were tallied the winner was the Hunt
family or Redding, CA.
The original letter read like this:
Bob and Marilyn have been married for 41 y ears. They raised two
children and about 10 years ago Marilyn was diagnosed with a rare disease
- autoimmune hemolytic anemia. 6 years later her 35 year old son, a
teacher and coach in Chester, was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy and
within a year was completely bedridden. Marilyn has been his in-home
caregiver ever since. In January, Marilyn was hospitalized and
after two blood transfusions finally released from the hospital, but
within days was back in the hospital. She had to have colon surgery
and then she had a severe stroke. She is now at Northern Rehab
Hospital recovering. Bob spends every day with her at the hospital
while a nurse tends to Doug at home. At 5pm when the nurse leaves,
Bob returns home to care for Doug through the night. These people
are the most hardworking, dedicated people I know. They need to have
a beautiful backyard where Marilyn can recuperate. Since they can't
leave their son - not even for one day. They need a vacation
hideaway at home.
On a sad note, before the Backyard Makeover could be completed, Doug
passed away.

The statues to the right have a strong sentimental
value for the Hunt family. They belonged to Bob's mother and
date back to the mid century.
|
 |
 |
|
When the backyard makeover began, the statues were
faded, broken and neglected. Vic Hannan and the folks from Al's
Garden Art undertook the task of refurbishing all of these classic
works.
